Hawley Scholarship Foundation History

An April 24, 1990 article in the Hawley Herald discusses the beginnings of this foundation. It was in 1989 that Doris Thysell began her quest for the program. “I was concerned for our graduates. I was hoping to find a way to do more for them. It’s great to see scholarships given each year, yet I thought we could do more. I knew of the Dollars for Scholars foundation and its success in other schools. With some encouragement from others, I pursued my interest,” said Thysell.

According to the article, the original board of trustees included: Dave Brenna, Curtis Johnson, Margie Erickson, Sally Critchley, Margaret Sellin, Leona Anderson, Steve Aakre, Kelly Aakre, Barbs Hansen, Willard Thysell and Dorris Thysell. The article also mentions committee members: Barb Anderson, Dennis Wamre, and Deanna Ulven.

A reorganizational meeting of the Hawley Dollars For Scholars was held in February of 1995. Officers that were appointed included: President-Charlene Christenson, Treasurer-Jerry Pederson, Secretary-Jane Eklund. Other committee members include: Norma Dauner, John Elton, and Veronica Johnson.

Records show that initial plans were made that year for a phone-a-thon fundraiser (which is still held annually, over two decades later). Also, in 2014 the organization changed their name from Dollars for Scholars to Hawley Scholarship Foundation.  Over the years a number of Hawley community members have also served on the board and/or committee, including Rand Alland, Sheryl Grandbois, Jeanne Hanson, Carmen Olson, Teresa Kuhn, Dan Kuhn, Laurie Boeshans, Vickie Carlson, Scott Jorgenson, Darcy Schenck, Kathleen Glad, Ruth Christianson, Jill Swanson, Jennifer Geeslin, and Nick Birchem.

The Hawley Scholarship Foundation (HSF) relies on four different sources for providing scholarships: the Phone-A-Thon, Permanent Endowment Fund, Memorial or Honorary Scholarships, and Bequests.

1995 was the year of the first Phone-A-Thon.  This fundraiser involves a number of high school student volunteers calling school district residents asking for pledges. (100% of funds raised in the Phone-a-Thon are used for scholarships.)

Interest is drawn from the foundation’s Permanent Endowment Fund for annual scholarships. (Contributions to our endowment fund are always welcome.)

We have a variety of scholarships given by private parties or by organizations. These Memorial or Honorary Scholarships
are sometimes chosen by the sponsor of the scholarship, the HSF application process, or by a committee as identified in the criteria of the scholarship.

People may contribute to the foundation by designating a Bequest to the foundation in their wills.

Since 1991, over 1,917 scholarships have been awarded to 973 recipients for a total of $1,015,275.
